A Killer Answer on How To Beat The Labyrinth Two-Door Riddle

Because that’s the way it’s done…

I’m really surprised how many 90’s kids and later haven’t seen the 1986 cult classic ‘The Labyrinth’. It’s a classic coming of age tale with blatant sexual undertones that I noticed even at 10 years old (the first time I saw it at a friend’s house). Now, when scrambling on what to write about this week I figured, why not write about one of Labyrinth’s most notorious puzzles? I’m talking of course about the two door riddle!

For those of you who fall into the category of ‘never seen it’ with the movie ‘The Labyrinth’, you’re in luck. The movie follows our protagonist, Sarah, as she encounters the two doors while attempting to rescue her baby brother from the clutches of Jareth, the incredibly gorgeous, crystal-ball-juggling Goblin King. Jareth at best it is a hopeless romantic and at worst a sore loser. He was portrayed rather iconically by the late David Bowie. As a sidenote I think it’s fair to mention while I’ve never actually had a crush on David Bowie, I definitely do in this movie. I digress. In ‘The Labyrinth’ Sarah was given 13 hours to retrieve the her brother before he became “one of us. Forever.” This sounds Sarah trekking a quest through Jareth’s perplexing brick maze where anything is possible and nothing is what it seems.

The labyrinth is changes like seasons and inhabited by a band of creatures so wonderful that only Jim Henson (and Brian Froud) could dream them up. Among the cast are The Four Guards – a pair of two-headed, coat-of-arms bodied puzzle enthusiasts who present Sarah with a stumper, which she must solve in order to move to the next section of the maze.

There are two major rules with this being that there are two doors. One leads to the castle, and the other, to certain death. You may only ask ONE question – to one guard – to help you decipher which door is the correct one. No, you cannot ask for more questions. While this task sounds like a ‘piece of cake’ (more on that later), there’s always catch, this one is: one guard always lies, and one always tells the truth.

Now in order to accurately solve this puzzle, you would have to ask one guard (it doesn’t matter which one) which door the other guard would say leads castle. Now naturally BOTH guards will indicate the same door, which will be the door that doesn’t lead out. For purposes of this explanation , we’ll call the doors: A (the safe door), and B (death’s door). Let’s discuss:

Probability one: The guard you ask is the one who lies.

  • If the guard you asked is the one who lies, then he will try to throw you off the scent by telling you (falsely) that the other guard – the truthful guard – will point you towards door B. This makes door A the safe bet.

Probability two: The guard you asked is the one who tells the truth.

• If the guard you ask is the one who tells the truth, he will tell you (honestly) that the other guard – the lying guard – will point you towards door B. This makes door A still the safest bet.

In both cases, the outcome is pretty straightforward .In order to survive this task, you must walk through the opposite door you’ve been told.

Which is exactly what Sarah does in the film, but as many of my fellow Labyrinth fanatics probably remember, her success is short-lived. Upon crossing the threshold of the door she chooses, she falls through a hole in the floor, which sends her cascading into the clutches of the Helping Hands. I remember as a child, I chalked this up to her choosing wrong but as an adult I see she did in fact choose right. It’s an illusion, however, because Sarah made the unfortunate mistake of breaking Labyrinth law, not failing in logic.

The key to this plot twist lies in the script. Just before the trap door opens, Sarah says, “It’s a piece of cake.” The seemingly innocent sentence is the equivalent to dropping the F bomb in church within the Labyrinth world. I’ve counted and it is said three times throughout the film (and countless others in the novel), and each time she says it, something goes horribly wrong. Sarah even says it again when Jareth asks her how she’s enjoying his Labyrinth. “It’s a piece of cake,” she says, prompting him to speed up the clock and send in the cleaners, the final time it’s said is when Hoggle says it as the group of friends finally make it to Goblin City. It is only then after moments of eerie silence that Hoggle utters these words and boom a squad of goblin soldiers roll deep on our heroes. The moral of that story, at least in this part of the movie, is not to use the words ‘piece of cake’ in a place like the labyrinth which is ruled by a dangerously alluring King who can keep tabs on you via magical crystal balls.

Since we’ve proven the connection between the words ‘piece of cake’ and the events which follow them, this leaves the rules of our puzzle – and the validity of the solution – totally intact. You see, while Sarah ignored the guards’ advice, (not to mention making a downward detour into the oubliette) she certainly didn’t die. Now how about that little slice? Let’s just hope if you were to get this fortune cookie the alternative wouldn’t be as deadly.

Love you. Mean it.

“My end is my beginning”

Nelson Mandela once said it always seems impossible until it is done. I believe that this is true because America was the land which was built on the impossible becoming possible. I feel incredibly lucky to have a grown-up in here, in a country where we are taught that all things are possible. Despite the growing issues with what’s going on with our youth and our nation, I feel blessed that we live in a country where we CAN protest and oppose what goes on. We may not agree with everything that people are marching for nowadays but I can surely appreciate the fact that I live in a country where people can if they choose so.

This piece was inspired by a dream I had a years ago, I had been reading about the French Revolution and one of the things I found so disturbing was the imprisonment of Marie Antoinnette. Not only was Marie martyred, but in the days leading up to her gruesome death she was both psychologically and physically abused. The people who once answered to her as their Queen now killed her friends for sport and placed their decapitated heads in her cell for “company”. While France has certainly come a long way since those days, when I look at events in history around the world I feel lucky to live somewhere where I have a voice and representation.

Throughout history many strong women had to overcome great hurtles to make a difference in their world. They had to battle gender stereotypes and a patriarchal society which valued only the opinions of males. I am glad to live in a country where women have fought for the right for me to vote. This piece was created to remind us all that there are places in this world where you can be killed just for speaking your mind. To those who are unhappy with the state of this nation, to those who are not proud to be American, I challenge you imagine what it would be like to live in a country that didn’t afford you those rights.

Imagine living in a country where the risk of threat and death always looming. On having restrictions with how many kids you should have and what gender they need to be. Imagine living in country where you were persecuted for your race, religion and sexual orientation. A county where you’re told what profession you’ll have, who you’re to marry and what to watch and listen to. Imagine a country where you’re not allowed to say anything negative about the leader of it or risk death. When you think about it in retrospect, you are awarded (by living in this country) a privilege denied to many not just in recent times but over the course of several centuries.

You have opportunities and clean running water; a roof over your head and food on your plate. You have the freedom of speech, religion and press. You could grow up to become whatever you want to be, have as many children as you want and rattle on for hours about how much you hate our president. Just remember you are allowed to do this because you live in the greatest nation of all, America. This piece which I created serves to remind us just how lucky we are to live in a nation where we can celebrate both our similarities and differences and live without fear.

Love you. Mean it.

Makes Me Wanna Scream (2014)

Occasionally there are weeks where I am not quite sure what to write about. I think it’s a common thing for most authors out there to have one million and one ideas and not enough brain power to channel them all at once. sometimes I’m at a complete standstill with absolutely no ideas and others I’m like a hamster on a wheel where I can’t quite keep up with my own ideas.

This is one of these weeks, so I’m going to share with you a piece that I did back in 2014. Now, you may notice that there’s an ‘H’ instead of an ‘S’ next to my name and that’s because I created this gem BEFORE I was married when I was still engaged. I wish I could say something inspired this piece such as the movie ‘Scream’ (which definitely influenced it quite a bit, I mean come on?) but this piece was sincerely created out of boredom. I was sketching on the app my brushes and low and behold this was the end result.

When I look at this piece I think about just how quickly life goes. The things that we worry about each and every day (which take up so much space in our brain) can literally and figuratively kill us with worry and fear. When I look at this piece I am reminded of just how short life can be and how quickly we can blink and not be here. As morbid as it sounds, we are not guaranteed tomorrow and despite what we may say to our coworkers when we leave work each day the truth is we can only hope and pray we’re given another chance to wake up tomorrow.

We spend so much time worrying about having enough that we sometimes forget we are enough. Instead of worrying about deadlines, futures, and money it’s important to stop and take five minutes a day to catch our breath by looking to those who already think we do have it all. Put simply, if you were a character in the movie ‘Scream’ and the main antagonist had you cornered, would you really be worried about all the petty things that you worry about in your day-to-day life or would you be worried about your legacy and the people you love being left behind?

Love you. Mean it.

How To Enjoy Pina Coladas Without Sabotaging Your Low-Carb Lifestyle

April 2013: enjoying a Pina Colada

What if I told you that you can still enjoy that summertime taste of a Pina Colada WITHOUT all that extra sugar, carbs and calories? You’d probably wonder how on Earth I pulled something like that off. Well I didn’t do it alone, while I was surfing the world of Pinterest I came across this recipe on LowCarb-ology and knew I had to just try it. You can find it by clicking the link here: (https://www.lowcarb-ology.com/pina-colada-cocktail-thats-low-carb/#lowcarb_pina_colada_cocktail) OR you can continue reading this and find out how I tweaked the original and made it even better as well as made a dessert type drink out of it to try on the weekend.

I was ALWAYS making them for Family& Friends!

Pina coladas are special to me, I remember I enjoyed my first pina colada at 15 years old when I went to a summer luau with my Aunt, Uncle and Cousin. My cousin and I were amazed that the bartender catering the event even “served” us. Despite the fact that there wasn’t a drop of alcohol in it, I was immediately hooked on the taste of it. As the years went on booze was eventually (legally) added in and if I was out on the town drinking alcohol it was a frozen Pina Colada cocktail. I fell in love with the creaminess and the flavor at that luau at 15 years old.

Growing up on the Jersey shore it was the perfect drink to sip at the outdoor bars while listening to the sounds of loud music echoing from inside the bar, people loudly chatting, seagulls squawking and boats racing up and down the Barnegat Bay. On my honeymoon I spent a lot of time at this local bar and grill called LuLu’s Bait Shack in Fort Lauderdale. They had this amazing Pina Colada that were served in a souvenir glass, which you got to keep. They were DELICIOUS! I was happy to reuse and be able to take home with me the tall glass shaped like a bikini body for the longest time — I don’t know what happened to it.

Since starting my low carb lifestyle I don’t really drink, besides even without the rum a genuine pina colada alone can range from 65 to 7 grams of carbs and that alone is enough to take a step back from something I once loved.

One of these bad boys is 65 grams of carbs…

It was then I knew I needed to find a way to have my pina colada and drink it too. Enter Pinterest and the lovely link I provided you with above for the original. I learned from Low Carb-ology just how valuable water enhancers are and while I initially scoffed at the author’s claim that it changed the way she looked at cocktails, I am now very inclined to agree. While I’ll freely admit, I was weary of a water enhancer that would supposedly taste like the real thing I have got to say Dasani REALLY delivers in my book . Margaritaville (as in the wonderful company which gives you alcoholic mixers and fancy blenders) also has several frozen drink inspired water enhancers all only 1 gram of carb but I love Dasani because their water enhancers are 0 carbs and soooo delicious. Whenever I am in Shop Rite or my local super Walmart I check out the water enhancers and am super careful to read the label on each one to see what flavors are available.

Me in 2014 enjoying the real thing…

Much like the author of the original recipe, I have totally replaced fruit juice in my cocktails with water enhancers and you can’t tell the difference.

When I came across this recipe and realized I basically had everything I needed in my house already just imagine my excitement. When I set out to follow the recipe I tried to keep in the back of my mind to keep my standards kind of low because there of been plenty of things that I’ve tried to make low-carb (some of which I am still trying to find mimic some of the tastes I miss so much) but don’t deliver.

That said, I never share with you guys what I feel like doesn’t deliver, so that fact that I’m writing it gives it away as gold. I actually did a Facebook live video the first time I made this drink and looking back and re-watching it I can see the trepidation I had in taking my first sip. I expected to be let down, however, I was not as this cocktail is nearly identical in flavor and texture to my favorite Pina Colada! I haven’t exactly tried it with the alcohol yet, however, the original author has and claims that it packs a powerful punch very much like the original and I take her word for it.

Now while I tried this recipe and thought it was fantastic, it got my wheels turning. I wanted to make it my own and so I tweaked it in a way that made it totally Brittany and I think you’ll all agree mine is better (no offense low-carb-ology).

My Facebook Live video; excuse the quality!

Now what I love most about this recipe is I can dress it up and make it a low-carb dessert shake or dress it down to essentially NO carbs and have it taste nearly identical to the original pina colada. The choice is yours and that’s the beauty of it. My husband has a ritual of chocolate chip cookies and milk each night and my new ritual is this gem of a recipe where I truly feel like I’m treating myself minus all the sugar, carbs and-Oh yeah, guilt!

Anyway, if you like Pina Coladas and getting caught in the rain…(now I’m singing this song in my head, just great!) you are going to love this low carb Pina Colada cocktail! Hey make sure drink responsibly — don’t drink and drive. There’s too much at stake and lives that can be destroyed!

Learning To See Myself Though My Niece’s Eyes

Originally I was going to write about a drink recipe of mine I was dying to share with you but life had other plans. The store that typically carries it was out and I found myself scrambling for an idea of what to write and what to say to all my loyal fan friends on here. My first reaction was to berate myself for not being more organized but then I stopped, took a breath and regrouped. What good would putting myself down accomplish? What would my niece say if she was sitting here listening to me put myself down?

I created this piece in 2011, I sketched it on the app ‘MyBrushes’ and its a favorite of mine. My niece is sitting on my lap in awe of me opening my presents. It was a picture my husband took that I was compelled to draw one night during my early twenties when insomnia would strike. It also is a sketch which puts things in prospect for me.

When I think of all the adults that told me through the years how quickly the years go by I lost count but it’s true. Now that my niece is on the verge of turning nine she’s old enough to pick up on how people view themselves. I know my niece thinks I’m the best Aunt in the world (she tells me so every time she sees me) and what kind of message am I sending her every time I put myself down and give in to the hard fought battle (one which I am now winning) in self esteem? Not the best one.

My niece doesn’t care what color my hair is, whether or not I’m wearing designer clothes, what I car drive, what my job is, or how much I weigh. She doesn’t care that as I write this I’m secretly hoping it’s good enough, that people like and want to hear what I have to say. She doesn’t see the anxiety and little flaws in my appearance and personality I try to “fix”. She sees a fun, carefree and beautiful Aunt who to likes to bake treats for her and make slime with her. Who helps her draw things and encourages her to do her very best in whatever she’s doing. She see’s the best of me, the version of me it took me almost 30 years to see and appreciate. When I started loving myself both on the outside and the inside I was able to see myself in a totally different light.

If we saw ourselves in the eyes of our children, our godchildren, our nieces and nephews, our family and friends instead of in the numbers on a scale or a two dimensional reflection in a mirror we’d lead much more fulfilling lives.

That’s the purpose of the this piece, to remind us that for all our shortcomings and things in life that go unplanned there’s always someone who’s looking up to you. For every time you look in the mirror and call yourself fat there are impressionable eyes and ears that are watching and listening to you and learning how to love (or not love) themselves.

Remember to love yourself, be kind to yourself, and focus on what you have to offer the world rather than what you lack. Learn to love yourself in the way those who look up to and admire you do. Don’t sweat the little things in life that can be changed, because these years go very quickly and we owe it to ourselves to make them the happiest we can. As I end this post I feel confident that this topic, this art piece which I’m sharing was meant to be shared tonight and low carb pina colada recipes can surely wait till next week.

Love you. Mean it.

7 Things About Hair Color And Care Techniques You’ll Kick Yourself for Not Already Knowing About

I dedicate this post to my stylist Melissa

(Who I am eternally grateful for her time, talent and ALWAYS makes me feel Bellissimo! ♥️😘)

I never loved my natural hair color. I remember being a little girl and watching my Mother get her hair done (a foil frost from my stylist cousin, Chrissy). I used to watch in awe at how her face just seemed to brighten up, her smile was a little wider and I could tell she felt truly beautiful as she glanced in the mirror at the finished product. I begged her for years to let me put one or a few sporadic highlights in my hair but her answer was always the same, “no you’re much too young for that”.

Finally, the day came she said “yes, you can.” and that was first time I was allowed to put a few sporadic highlights in my hair. I was thirteen years old and I was hooked. The rest, as the saying goes, was history.

I’ve had my hair just about every color you could imagine from platinum blonde to fire engine red and every other color in between before settling on my ravishing raven locks. During this time, I learned a thing or two about hair color and care through my experience that I’d love to pass on with all of you. Now as for where I receive this information, I have talked to many stylists (mostly within my own family) through the years and I always write whatever they say regarding tips and suggested products down in my journal so I can always look fresh. The time has come though to share these tips outside of my close friends and family. Whether you color your hair or someone you know and love does, hopefully you can help them out by sharing these tips.

1. Nourishment Gives It A More Natural Look

Let’s be real, if you want your hair to be healthy after you color it, especially if you lighten your hair, it’s important to keep it well-nourished and hydrated. Blondes, ask your salon if they carry Olaplex which prevents and repairs any damage bleach can cause your hair. Brunettes, Redheads and Raven haired people, ask your stylist for a glaze between color pull throughs (pulling the hair color all the way through root to ends excessively can cause needless damage ) to give your hair breaks and nourishment between salon visits. When I used to bleach my hair to get the color I wanted, I would apply cold-pressed coconut oil to my hair the night before I bleached it. This seemed to minimize the damage to my hair shafts which my hair is thankful for even to this day. I’ve come across this practice too on L’Oreal’s blog in one of the posts and chuckle because I’ve been doing this forever, well, since I was 19. Now that I keep my hair as dark as my mascara, I always get a glaze to nourish and lock in the color longer between salon trips and generally keep it medium to short in length. Trimming and cutting your hair every 6-8 weeks helps prevent the spread of damage by breakage and dead ends and my hair looks way healthier shorter.

It was supposed to be light brown, I swear!

2. Don’t Use Box Dye, Go To A Salon and Get It Done Right

Leave dying hair to the professionals! When searching for the perfect stylist and salon browse the before and after pictures posted on social media by past clients to ensure you go to someone who you feel comfortable with. If you’re hell bent on doing it yourself make sure you get a good dye and bleach so your hair does not get too damaged, visiting your local beauty supply store is a good start just check their requirements before purchasing as you may need a beautician license to get to the good stuff.

If you are lifting color with bleach, ensure you talk with a stylist or professional about getting the right developer for your hair color. For example, I can always tell when someone uses a 40 volume developer for hair that’s light to begin with because their hair looks more fried than a bucket of KFC extra crispy chicken. My hair was pretty light to start, so when I ended up flipping from red to blonde in 2005 my stylist at the time only recommended we use a 20 or 30 volume developer despite my cries of protest that I needed the stronger to fix my blunder. I’ve also shamelessly used protecting products like Brazilian bond builder in the months that followed that incident to minimize the damage I caused while I was stripping my hair of color of that AWFUL color.

While dyes are a dime a dozen, its always important choose a salon or a dye itself that is free of harsh chemicals like ammonia, my salon is really big on Redkin and I have to say I am highly impressed with the quality.

Me at 21 with light brown hair

3. Don’t ‘Freestyle’ It

This goes back to tip number two, PLEASE go to a professional. I can’t tell you how many people have sat next to me in the salon telling their stylist the color on the box was NOT the color they got when they dyed it themselves. If you insist on skipping my sound advice follow EVERY step exactly in the directions that come with the box. Now is NOT a time to freestyle things it’s not a DIY craft you can add your own creative flair to. It’s your hair so treat it as such, follow the times for process to the ‘t’ and set a timer so you don’t forget to wash it out. You do NOT want to leave your bleach or dye on for too long, don’t believe me? Search it on YouTube and be scarred for life with the over-processed hair videos they’re truly frightening. Once again, find a salon and stylist you’re comfortable with and you can avoid any at home blunders all together.

My salon always keep my raven mane looking 👍🏻

4. Don’t Wash Your Hair Right Away

Once you’ve colored your hair, try to wait at least 48-72 hours (2-3 days) before you wash your hair again. This will help the color set in well and will minimize color bleeding. It would also help to oil your hair before you wash it as the oil will form a protective layer around your hair shaft, minimizing fading. As a staple, I ALWAYS wash my hair in cool to lukewarm water. Hot water can open your hair shafts and expel that color you paid good money to achieve while cool water keeps these shafts closed which keeps the color locked in and looking salon fresh longer.

Available at your local drugstore for $7.99
Available at Ulta Beauty for $34.50

5. Be SUPER Picky About your Products and How Much Heat You Apply To Your Hair

While on the topic of showering, always choose shampoos that are SULFATE FREE. I highly recommend L’Oreal Ever Pure Sulfate Free and Redkin Color Extend Magnets (which are personal favorites of mine). Just like hot water is hair color’s archenemy, so are hot tools. Blow dryers, flat irons, curling wands and other hot tools can all cause damage to your already fragile hair. If you have super wavy and frizzy hair, like me, try to limit the use to twice a week. Investing in a quality heat protectant spray will help combat any damage caused by hot tools. I use Tresemme thermal creations which provides heat protection for your hair from hot tools up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. I’ve used this product for nearly 10 years and have not experienced heat damage since. If you avoid washing your hair everyday and invest in a quality dry shampoo (baby powder actually works wonders too) you can make the most out of your choice of styled hair longer without turning to daily use of styling tools.

Available at Rite Aid for $4.75

6. Don’t Wash Your Hair Everyday and Avoid Excessive Time In The Sun

Piggybacking off of number five, washing your hair daily is super counterproductive with color treated hair. Color tends to bleed out when you wash your hair too often so one of the best ways to make it last longer is to cut down on your washes. Because I have such greasy hair, I used to wash 3-4 times a week, I have now cut it down to 2-3 times a week. As odd as it sounds, if my hair still smells good and isn’t looking too much like a greasy pit I skip the wash and pop on a shower cap. Not only has this technique helped make my color last but also it also preserves the natural oils produced by your scalp that my Grammy used to always ramble on about and happen to nourish your hair.

Just like heat products in excess aren’t good for colored hair neither is too much time in the sunlight. Investing in a nice wide brim hat, I purchased mine at the end of last summer on clearance at Walmart, is key in having fun in the sun. They can be as simple or as fancy as you’d like but the important thing is they’re keeping your hair safe from that summer heat.

L’ORÉAL root touch up available for $9.97
at your local Walmart

7. Wait 6-8 Weeks Between Touch Ups

While it may be tempting the second you see roots start to appear, always wait 6-8 weeks between salon appointments or at home dying. We don’t realize how much stress we put our hair through every time we color it, which is why our hair needs rest. Instead, invest in L’Oréal ‘s Magic Root Cover Up which is available in just about every color you can imagine and it helps you look like your fresh out of the salon even as the weeks to your next salon appointment are still three more to go, you can count on this touch up spray to see you through.

A Salon Fresh Snapchat Selfie

If you follow these steps you’ll be sure to have shiny, healthy and strong hair no matter how you choose to color or style it. Our hair sends powerful statement to others about who we are and what we like and it’s time to give it the proper care it deserves!

Until next time…

The 5 Movie Universes that I would NOT want to live my life in.

because some places are just best left on the silver screen…

It’s early November 2001, and I’m 12 years old sitting on my light pink leather couch. In one hand, theres a piece of popcorn which hovers by my mouth, my left arm suspended in mid-air while my right arm is pulling my terrified 4 1/2 year old brother close. We are watching Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and Joseph is scared because the timid Professor Quirrell was just revealed to be possessed by Harry’s archenemy Lord Voldemort. As captivated as I am by the scene that’s unfolding before my eyes, I spare a glance at my little brother and whisper, “it’s okay, Joey, it’s just a movie.” This seems to calm him just a little bit, but as I went to bed that night, I wished with all my heart that it wasn’t ‘just a movie’ and having read all the books, I fantasized about what my adventures at Hogwarts would be like if it were real.

Now that I’ve got your attention, I’m sure if you took a moment right now that each and every single one of you had a movie that you felt that way about. It’s not surprising to me at all that according to a survey done by statista in 2017 the total box office revenue in North America amounted to 11.38 billion U.S. dollars in 2016 for the year. I think most people would agree that, as Americans, we sure do love our movies. It’s a temporary escape from real life, the chance to connect with characters, and a storyline that is meaningful to the viewer. I know every time I put in movies like Forrest Gump or the Harry Potter series there’s a sense of homecoming. It’s like visiting my hometown and seeing familiar faces and places which provide me with a sense of nostalgia that comes with the sense knowing where I came from and where I’m going.

I don’t need fancy statistics to tell you that people often associate movies with significant times and events in their lives even into adulthood. Think about your current significant other, I bet you that you can remember the first movie that you two saw together. I know whenever I think of the movie Anchorman, I think of that being the very first movie that Tom and I ever watched together as a couple. It’s meaningful and nostalgic and every year on our dating anniversary we snuggle together on the couch and watch that movie for old time sake.

Movie universes become familiar to us, they give us a sense of belonging and introduce us to the characters we love and invest our feelings into. The characters, become more like close friends or family members, and we want to see them succeed at all costs. The setting and plot also play a crucial role in whether we stick around or not, and while I’m sure I could easily think of several movie universes I wouldn’t mind living my real life in, that’s for another post. In this post, I’m going to discuss five movie universes I’m really glad I don’t have to live my real life in. Because let’s face it, some movie plots and settings are best left on the silver screen!

1. Halloween– Any Universe which houses Michael Myers, the iconic knife-wielding killer of the franchise, is NOT a movie universe I want any part in. If someone doesn’t actually die when tranquilized, set on fire, stabbed, ran over, electrified and injected with acid, then that something is not worth going toe to toe with. Michael always symbolized pure evil, evident in the blank look behind his eyes, and any universe that holds that kind of evil is NOT one I wish to be any kind of reality.

2. It– This movie is the reason coulrophobia is a clinical term relating directly to fear of clowns (it’s certainly responsible for mine). Despite the fact that It was actually a shapeshifting monster who appeared in the form of whatever his victim was afraid of, any universe he exists in is not one I want to be involved in. In this universe you’re a part of a group called, The Losers, pre-adolescent kids who are running loose around the outskirts of a small town, bonding during the long summer days and nights with a lack of any kind of parental concern. This, of course, made my inner teacher cringe. In both movies, the new and old, Beverly has a terrifying abusive father; Bill has recently lost a brother, (the iconic scene of the little boy Georgie being lured to his death in the gutters) and his shell-shocked parents have mostly abandoned him to his own devices.

The creature which terrorizes town of Derry, Maine is not for the faint of heart. Watching these outcasts and nerds, whom are largely ignored and forced to find comfort in each other struggle against unspeakable evil is not any universe I want to be a part of. Not for nothing, but in this universe, you’d find yourself being hunted by a pack of ferocious, dangerous bullies — bigger kids who are bored with their sleepy town, and victimize other people for entertainment. If you can call, carving their name into their victim’s stomach, entertainment. You’d also set out to look for a corpse majority of the movie and along the way, become your fellow group member’s emotional support.

This tale doesn’t necessarily have a happy ending, at least in the original book and film where It comes back when the kids are adults and are forced to face their old nemesis once more. Despite the eventual conflict resolution, the universe itself is downright depressing and oppressive and not one I want to be apart of at all.

3. Nightmare on Elm Street-Nothing is more relieving then waking up after a nightmare and realizing that it was just a dream. Not in this universe. In this universe you are hunted down by the burn scar-faced and claw handed Freddy Krueger and if he kills you in your dreams you’re done for in real life. I’m not sure who it would be more disturbing to be in this storyline, Jesse, who watches his ex-girlfriend die in her sleep in front of him then gets blamed for her death or Nancy, the waitress who it’s later revealed was abused by Krueger as a young girl. This universe offers you no sleep and another indestructible villain who,if he could drag the protagonist through a mirror after she cuts his hand off and slices his throat, what chance do you really stand in that universe?

4. The Purge– Unless you live under a rock ANY kind of universe where all crime (including murder) is legal for twelve hours is not my cup of tea, including the idea that the ‘New U.S. government’ in this plot sanctions it. Incase you’ve never heard of The Purge the rules to this movie’s plot are as followed:

▪ The one you heard in the trailer, that siren blares throughout the U.S. to signal the start and end of The Purge.

▪ During this time all police, fire, and medical emergency services remain unavailable or suspended for the twelve-hour Purge.

▪ Ironically, the only people exempt from this Purge are Government officials with “authorization levels” of ranking 10 or higher. It is revoked in Election Year to legalize the murder of a political opponent though.

▪ Weapons of “Class 4” and below are permitted for use while “Class 5” weaponry (explosive devices such as grenades, rocket launchers, bazookas, etc., weapons of mass destruction, and viral/biological and chemical agents) is prohibited.

▪ Public hanging is the penalty for violators of any rules.

Let that sink in. Imagine being totally helpless with your family and friends at risk of being murdered or assaulted and nobody legally obligated to help you. Not my cup of tea and personally I can’t think of anyone who would want themselves or their loved ones in this universe, can you?

5. Predator– Last, but not least, a universe where you are the hunted by an alien. Mind you that running into an alien in any universe is not for me, but how about a universe where you are hunted by one for sport? Not to mention this is an extremely intellegent being who will follow your every move and raise your paranoia to new levels of high, while carefully plotting a sadistic death for you, such as skinning you and keeping your body as a trophy. The Predator also has a plasma weapon, far more powerful than any weapon we humans can obtain. Oh, and did I mention that the Predator has a cloaking device that makes it invisible, and yes he had one before Harry Potter, so to top it all off you can’t see this thing and thats even more frightening. So imagine living in a universe where there are creatures that you can’t see, have plasma weapons, and hunts you down just for sport, does that sound like a fun place to live for you? If the Predator took down Green Berets and an elite paramilitary rescue team, imagine what it could do to the average person like you or me. Yeah, no thanks, I’m good.

Which universes are you grateful do not exist in real life?

Love you. Mean it.

Keto Cookies Recipe

image2

One thing I miss most about my lifestyle change is cookies. Let’s face it, I’m a sucker for some sweets and there are days I truly miss the taste of a delicious chocolate chip cookie and a tall glass of milk. When searching for a recipe that would satisfy my sweet tooth I was determined to find one that wouldn’t compromise taste or allow me to be breaking any rules. So in being honest, there are more keto chocolate chip cookie recipes on the internet then there are fish in the sea and I’m willing to take that statement to the bank. Some looked okay and some looked way too dry either way I went through a great deal of pins until I found the one I wanted to try.

When I came across this particular recipe on Pinterest, I thought, ‘why not?’ and decided to try my hand at these super delicious looking keto chocolate chip cookies. While I will go on record and say they were fairly good, I will be tweaking this recipe further because it did have a slightly bitter taste to it (although I think I added too much Sweet N Low to mine). I ended up storing mine overnight in the refrigerator and it took the bite out of bitterness, they were definitely a treat to pick at during the week and it didn’t affect my weight negatively. So without further ado let’s get down to business and give you what you stopped by for, the recipe of course! Please be sure to follow this recipe exactly and let know if yours turned out any better than mine did!

What you’ll need:
• 1 ½ Cups of Almond Flour
• ½ Cup of Salted Butter
• ¾ Cup of Natvia (or Erythritol)
• 1 tsp of vanilla extract
• 1 egg
• ½ tsp baking powder
• ¼ tsp salt
• ¾ Cup Hershey’s sugar free chocolate chips

Got it! So now what?!
1. Preheat your oven to 355 F and nuke the butter for 30 seconds, the goal is to melt the butter but not make it hot.
2. Now that butter you just melted is going to get tossed into a mixing bowl and be beat with the Natvia. Once it’s mixed all harmoniously you’re going to add the vanilla and egg while mixing on low with a hand mixer for exactly 15 seconds.
3. Great! So far so good! Now you’re going to take your almond flour, baking soda, salt and mix it until it is well combined.
4. Press that dough together and remove from the bowl. Combine the chocolate chips into the dough with your hands (ha! And you thought you weren’t going to get messy).
5. Roll that dough to make 12 balls and place them neatly on a baking tray. Bake them for 10 minutes.
6. Let them cool, and serve them up. Store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator they’re even better cold!

Overall thoughts: When I sent Tom to the store he picked up the closest thing to Natvia, which was apparently Sweet N Low. This gave my cookies (as mentioned above) a slightly more bitter taste. Since I didn’t follow the recipe exactly and added too much Sweet N Low so I HIGHLY recommend not being a hero and following recipe exactly what it calls for. Overall since I messed it up and they were still eatable I’m going to give them 3.5/5 stars.

Goals and Such

Hello Fan Friends!

As many of you may know I am very obsessed with keeping each post fresh, relevant and relatable. Like I said in my first post, I want you to think of me as a friend you sit down and have coffee with on Friday nights. As such I want to share with you the fact that I’ve gotten a spike in my views lately and seeing some old friends come out of the woodwork to comment on my posts current and past is an amazing thing!

Starting this fall I will be launching a Facebook page for ‘Are You There Friday? It’s Me Brittany’ and I encourage you to like it and share my posts on Facebook, Pinterest and wherever else you feel a particular article needs to be heard. As the Beatles once said, I get by with a little help from my friends and that means all of you!

This week, I decided to do an update because I am also working on getting my first novel published and this week I am determined to get three chapters written because in my quest to build a perfect blog I have neglected another dream of mine to be a published author. However, this blog will ALWAYS be important and updated. Here’s the direction I hope to go into in the next few months:

🌀Life Hacks

🌀Low Carb/Keto Friendly Recipes

🌀In My Makeup Bag (makeup reviews)

🌀Wine Reviews

🌀Carolina Panthers Game Recaps

🌀More Frequent Posts! (I’ll work out a schedule come fall)

🌀A podcast ‘Are You There Friday? It’s Me Brittany’

🌀And so much more!

Stay tuned, stay well, see you on Friday!

Love you. Mean it.

  • How To Create

An Affirmation Page for your Bullet Journal I’ve been slacking with making sure my scheduled posts are posted on Friday this last week and half. In my defense I have a serious obsession with bullet journaling and yes I know I’m late to the game. I purchased my Happy Planner, which is a Journal/Planner/Scrapbook hybrid and so super easy to personalize and get creative with! For me, it’s been relaxing and therapeutic being able to get it all out there. Each week I do something called a “Brian Dump”. Now generally, a brain dump consists of “to do”‘s but that’s WAY too mainstream for your girl Brittany. That’s why I use my brain dump for affirmations; last week I did positive affirmations about myself, and this week? Well, this week I asked family and friends to describe our friendship/relationship in ONE word. It was harder then it sounded for some of them but the responses I got were so genuine and loving that it humbled me greatly to see a glimpse of myself through their eyes and I immediately felt blessed. An affirmation brain dump is really easy to put together there’s really maybe five steps tops and tonight I’m going to show you how it’s done! Here’s what you need:1) Create 365 ‘The Classic Happy Planner Daily Planning Refill” ($4.99 at Michael’s Craft Store)2. A Cellphone with text message/text reaction abilities. (I have an iPhone 7)3. Computer and Printer4. Colored pencils, glue stick, scissors and sharpie pens (fine point)5. Creativity! OK so the first thing you need to do is make sure that you have done daily planning refill pages which you could pick up at any Michael’s/ AC Moore Craft Store for five dollars. If you sign up for Michael’s for rewards you could keep an eye out for coupons which lower the prices greatly and get it for even less. What I really love about these pages is that they come pre-hole punched so you don’t have to worry about it, also what I love about the happy planner is you can add as many different pages and cover a wide variety of topics to your journal as you’d like (you may need to invest in some expansion disks though as your book gets filled up) and each of the daily sheets have a brain dump that you can use and just allow your creative juices to flow. Now that you’ve got your page set, decorate it, there’s no wrong way as long as it’s pleasing to your eyes. Once you’ve got your page decorated to your heart’s content text your family and friends and ask them to describe your friendship/relationship in one word. As they respond screenshot and crop their responses then send them in an email attachment to yourself. When you save the pictures from your email rename them the person who gave you that response’s name. Finally, print all of your text message bubbles out using the format of contact sheets (it’s the one AFTER wallet sized) and print. You may also do what I did depending upon the size of paper you are using for your brain dump and print out a few responses that come in in wallet sized format to give more of a dynamic in different sizes of responses in your collage.Once you’ve printed out all of your responses, glue them using a glue stick and arrange them however you see fit onto the paper. Once your responses are dried on to the page you can place your page back into the book and there you have it! An affirmation page you can appreciate for YEARS to come! Are there any bullet journaling DIYs you want me to try and post on here? Leave a comment below and tell me what you’d like me to try!Love you. Mean it.Brittany
